INTERVIEW TO Jess Pillmore artist behind "A SECOND CHANCE" - Entrevista a Jess Pillmore, artista detrás de "A SECOND CHANCE"

With just a glimpse to your flickr profile I got the impression you have quite a busy life: crafter , touring arts teacher , Music producer . The first question that comes to my mind is: with such a hectic life, how many hours do you sleep? My family use to call my "Sloth" in my teens... so I think I was just getting extra sleep prepping up for now! I sleep a ton. I'm definitely of the 8 hours+ a night school of thought. I think a lot of our current health problems stem from super multi-tasking and not getting enough true rest. Those career hats sound like a lot but I do them at different times. Rarely am I doing music, theatre, knitting and teaching all in one day. I have many pots on the stove, some boiling, some simmering... my life's a five course meal, I guess.

When did you 1st discovered etsy?It was in the wind. You now, I really don't know how I came across it but I'm glad I did. It's a great community of artisans and buyers. I felt such a strong connection to a large group of people. It reminded me of my first international Folk Alliance conference. There were floors and floors of music being performed for 4 days straight and instead of feeling small, I felt that there was room for us all. With so many types of folk music going on, there was never a moment of scrambling for an audience... worrying that someone might be playing at the same time you are (cooler, better, more well known than you) and "stealing" your audience. It just didn't happen, if you put your voice out there there will be people that want to listen and respond. Etsy's community feels like that to me.

When did you feel the urge to open your shop?I had been thinking about it for over a year, specifically as a shop. The idea for A Second Chance had been brewing further back than that. But in November 2007, I thought "why not?!" and put a few scarves and cloths up. The started selling right away, which prompted me to start looking into brick and mortar stores as well as Etsy.

In your shop “A Second Chance” we can find a varied range of re-crafted products, What is the trickiest part of recrafting a garment? Not coming into the process with a strict, preconceived idea of what it should be. My performing arts work, especially improvisation, has helped me a lot. I deconstruct a piece first, go back to its building blocks, and try and see what it wants to be now. Not all sweaters are put together the same, so that shows itself immediately. I have a fun orange cable purse that is a great example of that. Once I took it apart, I saw how the cable started the left torso panel, continued around the neck and back down the right torso panel. The panels were attached by buttons. I threw it over my shoulder and realized it would make a rad purse. So I did what needed to be done, lines it and there you go. I think the key for recrafting is to utilize what still works and be open for a ton of new ways to reinvent it. I had trouble feeling guilty about taking the original sweaters, pants, shirts, etc. apart the first few times. Afraid that what I was going to repurpose them into wouldn't be as good as what they original were. Silliness, really. I think that's what stops a lot of people from expressing themselves in any genre... the fear of not being original, of being judged. But I had to listen to what I teach my students, "the only wrong answer is no answer".

Do you have a common source of inspiration for all your art expressions? My life around me. I'm a magpie, I guess, picking up phrases thrown around in dinners, scenic images on the highway, etc. I always admired Dianne Fossey, the way she immersed herself in the art of observing without judgement. I think it confuses some people that I do so many things, but they're all tied to a common base... me. It's just how I see, hear, feel and think about life. Each art form helps me dig deeper into the other. Dance led to Theatre led to Music, and the whole time I was enjoying crafting with my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother. And I recycled because I have a hard time tossing something that still has a use, I wouldn't want someone to do that to me.

You are constantly moving around the USA, how do you manage to craft and carry with you all the necessary things? Doing this and touring in the USA is easier than it sounds... doing this internationally (come Fall 2008) might get trickier. But right now, I travel in my Prius and work on a few projects in the car, when I'm co-pilot, and dream up new pieces when I'm driving. A lot of this is done in the car or our hotels. What's fun about recycling is that I can pop into a thrift store anywhere! So, when I get a request on Etsy, I can let fate do it's work. Since I've been touring solid for almost 7 years now, the other stuff is second nature (marketing, email, websites, press, contracts, etc.) Our company has its streamlined in to only a few suitcases now.

Is there any other places apart from your ETSY shop where we can find you? My knitwear website is http://www.wealldeserveone.com/ and soon I'll have a better list of brick and mortar stores where you can find my pieces.

Part of your benefits go to KIVA.org to help small businesses in developing worlds. That is really kind, is there any other social initiative you have joined? Part of Creatively Independent's mission statement, my performing arts company, is to give back. We donate our time to teach in underprivileged communities and schools. I also send out my cds to public libraries across the country as well as perform at benefits while we're on the road.

As a teacher, have you ever thought of doing a workshop on recycled clothing? I would totally dig that. And funny enough, I hadn't thought of that, so thank you! I'd be curious to see what everyone would come up with, it sounds like a blast.
Me encantaría.

There are other forms of recycling a garment, such as t-shirt or jumper surgery have you ever tried? For myself, and they're fab. I'm so excited that people are not only upcycling but they're putting their own spin on their clothing. It's good to not look exactly like the catalog, in my opinion! Soon, A Second Chance will incorporate many different clothing mediums, not just sweaters. I'm starting out small because I can hand sew and hand knit on the road but my great-grandma's sewing machine ha to stay put at my house. It's over almost 100 years old and not at all mobile.
“A Second Chance” incorporará pronto otras prendas, no tan solo jerseys.

What would you like to hightlight from your work pieces? I'm working on a duvet cover that I'm very excited about. It's not available yet, but it's in the vein of my Scarf of Many Sweaters and my new The EcoBaby Blanket is fun because it's soft and durable with sweaters on one side and jeans on the other. Perfect for an impromptu picnic.

What would you do if you won the lottery tomorrow? Keep doing what I'm doing, definitely with the addition to making my farmhouse more sustainable (solar/wind power). And set up a fund for arts in schools. I believe we're really crippling our kids by not giving them the tools and opportunities to express themselves and appreciate how others express themselves
